In 2025, after a series of setbacks, I found myself back in my parents' basement rebuilding my life. While starting over, I turned to running and began sharing my journey online. What started as training became a purpose: The Homestretch.
My parents have spent their entire lives renting, navigating rent increases, difficult landlords, and the uncertainty that comes with never having a place to truly call their own. Despite that, they always provided me with love, stability, and a foundation to stand on even when I needed it most.
The Homestretch is my commitment to turning my passion for running, content creation, and the opportunities they create into a home that my parents own outright. Every mile is a step toward giving back to the people who have given me everything.
BIG PICTURE
While The Homestretch began as a mission to buy my parents a home, it also raises a larger question: why has homeownership remained out of reach for so many families in the first place?
For generations, Black families in America faced barriers to building wealth through homeownership. Practices such as redlining, housing discrimination, unequal access to lending, and residential displacement limited opportunities to own property and pass wealth from one generation to the next. While many of these policies are no longer legal, their effects continue to shape communities today.
My family's story is not unique. Like countless others, we've spent years navigating rising rents, housing instability, and the uncertainty that comes with never having a place to truly call our own. The Homestretch is my personal attempt to change that reality for my family, but it also serves as a reminder that behind every housing statistic are real people working, sacrificing, and striving for stability.
The next chapter will be about exploring those stories, understanding the systems that created these challenges, and imagining what it looks like to build a future where more families have the opportunity to create lasting roots and generational security. Stay tuned!
